CHENNAI: Alleged high-handedness of a deputy commissioner of police has put the future of an engineering college student at stake.Adithyan Vijayakumar (25) of T Nagar was booked on May 21 on charges of causing public nuisance and preventing officials from discharging their duty, which has made him ineligible to go to the UK for higher studies. Adithyan said his only mistake was to question the police for compelling him to go to the police station after 10.30 pm on that day.“Because of the behaviour of the senior police officer, my son can’t pursue higher studies in the UK this academic year. He got admission for MBA at Birmingham City University of London. But, the university will not admit him because of the criminal case,” said P E Vijayakumar, Adithyan’s father and owner of Hotel Sakithyan at T Nagar, where the incident took place. On May 21, Adithyan went to the hotel around 10.30 pm to pick up his father. “When I was in the hotel bar Candy Club, the police entered the facility,” said Adithyan. Though the main entrance was closed after service, they forced the staff to open the door and came inside, he said. “Some policemen informed the then Deputy Commissioner of Police Thirunavukarasu that I was in charge of the hotel. He forced me to go to the police station,” he said. When Adithyan was going out of the hotel, Thirunavukarasu started beating him up, said Vijayakumar, showing hotel CCTV footage, which had been submitted to the State Human Rights Commission seeking action against the police officers. The footage clearly shows the DCP and other cops thrashing Adithyan. When Express asked Thirunavukarasu, since transferred, if he assaulted Adithyan, he said he would reply to it only in the court.
