KOCHI: In an attempt to intensify the anti-mosquito drive, the Kochi Corporation will supply nets to cover the air pipes of the septic tanks. A total of 50,000 nets will be supplied to the households with the help of various residents’ associations. “The inauguration of the programme to supply the nets will be launched on Monday. The septic tanks are breeding grounds for the mosquitoes and various residents’ associations have been demanding actions to avoid this. Covering of the air holes in the leaky pipes will help in controlling the mosquitoes that come out of the septic tanks, which prove to be the breeding grounds for them,” said Kochi Corporation Health Standing Committee chairman T K Ashraf. He also said that the marshy areas in Vypeen Island are another major breeding ground for mosquitoes. “We are planning to convene a meeting of officials from the District administration, BPCL, Kochi Corporation and other authorities concerned. The meeting will be held at the Ernakulam Guest House on February 10 and will discuss the steps to tackle the issue of mosquito menace at Vypeen Island,” he said. Along with this, other anti-mosquito drives such as fogging and flushing the drains with saline water will also be continued.Apart from anti-mosquito drive, the Corporation will organise an Environment Masters Training Camp for college students. “The training programme is organised in connection with Suchitwa Varsham project of the State government. The major aim of the programme is to implement the decentralised waste management system successfully,” Ashraf said.More than 300 selected students from seven colleges will participate in the training programme to be held at the Ernakulam Town Hall on Tuesday. “The college students will be given training on waste management. These students will later organise camps at various schools. They will then visit households to train people in efficient waste management,” he added.
