Court sees prima facie obscenity proof in IPL do

Holding that there is prima facie evidence to substantiate ‘obscenity’ during the inaugural ceremony of IPL V in April this year, the Madurai Bench of the Madras HC has rapped some Bollywood actors for staging the act in public.

On Monday, Justice N Kirubakaran lashed out at the counsel appearing for Bollywood actors Salman Khan, Priyanka Chopra and Amitabh Bachchan, who said they performed as per the agreement they entered into with the contractors.

“The performance was according to the agreement and the instructions of the choreographers. The choice of dress was not that of the actors,” said the counsel appearing for the actors. They further maintained there was nothing obscene about the performance.

In response Justice Kirubakaran asked, “Is it right for you to perform in public in indecent dress just because the choreographers suggested?” On seeing the photos produced in the court by Neelamegam, counsel for the petitioner, the judge said there is prima facie evidence for the case. The petitioner

K Jebakumar had sought initiation of criminal action against the actors, cricketers and other celebrities, apart from BCCI office bearers for the ‘obscene’ performance.

Counsel P S Raman, appearing for the BCCI, claimed the pictures were taken out of context. He said a few pictures produced in the court had cheerleaders in the background. “The pictures were taken by professional photographers, who had access to the stage. These images were not seen by the audience. Pre-censoring live telecast is not possible,” he argued.
