The tug-of-war between the LDF constituents - the CPM and CPI - over the ‘legacy’ of political killings took a new turn on Tuesday, with LDF convener and CPM leader Vaikom Viswan himself coming out against the CPI.
Vaikom Viswan said that it was the CPI which attacked him brutally 40 years ago and he was a victim of CPI’s political violence in 1972. Viswan said that the CPI, which now talks about political violence, must remember this. Vishwan also said that the difference of opinion on common issues between the partners would affect the front as a whole.
While Viswan came out in support of CPM and his party secretary, CPI leader V S Sunilkumar launched a scathing attack on CPM and its state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan alleging that out of the 16 CPI workers killed in political violence, 12 were killed by CPM. He also said that Subramanian, who was killed in Anthikkad was not a CPM worker but a Congressman. “Before raising the allegation CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan should ensure that what he utters is based on facts,” he said.
Sunilkumar also said that the CPM should not prove its innocence in political killings by dragging CPI into the whole controversy. It is for the court to decide whether P Jayarajan is involved in the murder and it is not a decision that can be made by the CPI, he said.
CPI state secretary Panniyan Raveendran the other day had retaliated to Pinarayi Vijayan’s allegation that CPI members had murdered CPM activists by terming it as ‘premeditated’ and ‘contract killings’ were not the legacy of CPI.
He had also said that it was unnecessary to give a reply to Pinarayi’s comments. Pinarayi had earlier said that the CPI should remember the violence committed by CPI during the split and the murders of CPM men they carried out.
He alleged CPI to be behind the murders of CPM activists Balakrishnan, Sudheendran and assault on Anthikkad Subramanian and Vaikom Viswan.
CPI leader Kanam Rajendran also come out in support of his party and said that befitting reply would be given if unwanted criticism was hurled at it.
