CWG scam: Charges against Kalmadi to be framed
The Delhi High Court had granted bail to Suresh Kalmadi on a surety of Rs 5 lakh after nine months.

New Delhi: Arguments on framing of charges against the sacked Commonwealth Games Organising Committee chief Suresh Kalmadi and others will begin on Wednesday in the CWG scam. Kalmadi was released on bail last month.

Meanwhile, BJP has accused the Congress of making Kalmadi a 'scapegoat' in the Commonwealth Games scam. "Why Delhi Chief Minister (Sheila Dixit) was not arrested in connection with the financial irregularities in the Commonwealth Games? Why was union sports minister not arrested? Why was union urban development not arrested for their role into the scam?" Venkaiah Naidu said.

The Delhi High Court on January 19 granted bail to Kalmadi on a surety of Rs 5 lakh after nine months. The HC also granted bail to former director general of CWG VK Verma.

Kalmadi, Verma and nine others have been accused of allegedly awarding a contract to a Swiss firm to install a Timing-Scoring-Result (TSR) system for the Games at an exorbitant rate, causing a loss of over Rs 90 crore to the state exchequer. The CBI, however, had opposed the bail pleas of Kalmadi and Verma saying the trial is to begin soon and would be held on a day-to-day basis. The CBI alleged Kalmadi was the key accused in the case.
