Delhi cop identifies Phoolan's killer
A Delhi Police constable and an eyewitness to the Phoolan Devi murder identified Sher Singh Rana as the main assailant.

New Delhi: The murder case of Bandit-turned-politician Phoolan Devi could be sped up a Delhi Police constable is to be believed.

Balinder, the Delhi Police constable and an eyewitness to the incident on Friday identified Sher Singh Rana as the main assailant in the case six years after the murder.

Balinder, who was posted at the gate of the slain Samajwadi Party MP's residence at Ashoka Road as a Personal Security Officer (PSO) in Delhi, identified Rana in the court of Additional Sessions Judge V K Bansal.

He said it was he who had fired from a pistol at her on July 25, 2001.

Meanwhile, Balinder, during his examination by the prosecution, also identified another accused Dheeraj Rana alias Dhan Prakash as the one who fired at him that day because of which he was injured.

The constable recalling the incident, told the court that he along with Phoolan had reached her Ashoka Road residence from Parliament at 1315 hrs IST on the fateful day.

He noticed that a car was parked in front of the house and accused Shekhar and Kalicharan were standing near it.

Balinder said that as soon as they were about to enter the house, Sher Singh and Dheeraj came running towards them, and Sher Singh shot twice at Phoolan from a distance of one foot.

Dheeraj on the other hand fired at him from a distance of one and a half feet, news agency PTI quoted him as saying.

He further told the court that Sher Singh was known to him as he used to visit the residence of the slain MP along with a party functionary Uma Kashyap.

Sher Singh had allegedly gunned down the M P and surrendered in Dehra Dun. He had claimed that he eliminated her to avenge the killing of his clan members when she was a bandit in 1981.
