New Delhi: A Delhi court on Tuesday sent Ram Singh, the prime accused in the brutal gangrape of a 23-year-old girl in the heart of the national capital, to police custody for five days, even as the Delhi Police decided that all the six culprits would also be charged with attempt to murder along with rape. The victim continues to be in a very critical condition with doctors attending to her saying that her injuries are severe and unusual which the hospital has never seen. Her medical bulletin says that she has received severe genital and intestinal injuries due to the gangrape and assault by the accused.

Meanwhile, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Tuesday met the victim in the hospital. She also spoke to Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit and Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde and National Commission for Women Mamata Sharma, asking them to take all possible measures should be taken so that such incidents do not occur.

Referring to the incident, she said, "It is a shame for all of us who are responsible for the security of our cities that a young woman can be raped in a moving bus in the capital of the country and flung on the road, this crime needs urgent government attention."

Earlier on Tuesday, facing severe criticism over the heinous crime, Delhi Police Commissioner addressed the media giving details of the case, saying that the six accused were drinking and were out to earn extra money on an off day, which is when they picked up some passengers, including the victim and her male friend.

After making some derogatory remarks, the accused got into a fight with the girl and her friend. Although the girl's male friend fought bravely, he was overpowered by the accused and then the men raped the girl.

The government and the political fraternity have spoken against such crime against women and there are voices cutting across the party lines, demanding stringent punishment for the culprits.

There were strong reactions in both the houses of Parliament as well. As members of Parliament condemned the rape, Union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde made a statement. He said, "The amendment for the protection of women has been passed in the Lok Sabha...this includes an increase in the punishment for rape."

Union Law Minister Ashwani Kumar also slammed the crime, saying, "The enforcement of law should be such that the accused is punished as soon as possible. There should be an atmosphere where those who commit such crimes must be ostracised from society."

Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar, on behalf of the House, appealed to the government to take strongest possible action in the case, and said that it should not leave any scope for anyone to complain on the issue.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Sushma Swaraj, narrated the plight of the victim before the House, demanding capital punishment for the culprits. She said, "The victim is fighting for her life in the hospital. Even if she survives she will live like a corpse. Do the perpetrators of such a crime not deserve a capital punishment? It's a shame if a girl cannot be safe with a male friend at 9:30 pm in this city."

Also slamming the incident in Parliament was noted actress and Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan, who said she was ashamed and helpless as she was sitting in the House and could not do anything.

Meanwhile, former IPS officer and Team Anna member Kiran Bedi said that the need of the hour was a planned police patrolling with the help of civilians. Speaking to CNN-IBN, Bedi said, "There is a compelling need for a planned police patrolling...the PCR vans should have policemen, women constable and civil warden patrolling in the key areas in evening. Not at traffic stops but randomised patrolling, and you will see that these people will actually run away."

Delhi Police is also going to write to the Union Home Ministry seeking appropriate changes in law to invoke death penalty for rapists. "We will surely send a proposal to the government (seeking death penalty for rapists)," City Police Commissioner Neeraj Kumar told reporters when asked whether the force would demand death penalty for those involved in the gangrape in a moving bus.

The police also told a Delhi court that the other three arrested culprits, Ram Singh's brother Mukesh, Vinay Sharma, an assistant gym instructor, and Pawan Gupta, a fruit seller, will be produced in court on Wednesday.

The Delhi government has also assured all assistance required in bringing the criminals to justice. Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said, "I have consulted the Delhi High Court Chief Justice to make fast-track court to expedite such cases, and whatever assistance is required for this, the Delhi government is ready to provide."
