Mumbai: Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Domestic Airport was the scene of much violence on Tuesday night.

Hundreds of supporters of a spiritual guru, Narendra Maharaj, attacked an Indian Airlines counter after the God-man was not allowed to take his wooden staff on board.

Over 500 protestors blocked all exits and passengers were trapped inside the terminal for over two hours.

The Mumbai police launched a lathicharge on followers of Narendra Maharaj, a sadhu from Ratnagiri, who was arriving in Mumbai from Lucknow.

Police then launched a lathi charge to disperse the crowd and allow the trapped passengers to leave.

"This is typical of the police - the way they conduct lathi charges. We were quietly doing our work," said a devotee.

When Narendra Maharaj emerged from inside the airport he didn't speak, but indicated his anger at the lathicharge through a spokesperson.

"Until they suspend the policemen who did the lathi charges, we won't let this airport function peacefully," his spokesperson said.

The security at the airport is still tight but all through the turmoil, flights to the airport were not disrupted.
