New Delhi: England's Nick Dougherty held a one-shot lead of the US Open after the first round on Day I. Two-time champion Tiger Woods was three shots behind after a one-over par 71.

The Oakmont Country Club was as easy as it gets. But the first round was as tough as ever.

Dougherty birdied three of his last eight holes to finish with 2 under 68. Angel Cabrera played some good shots to finish with 69, behind Dougherty.

Jose Maria almost aced the Par three sixth hole. But Tiger Woods was in command on one under till this bogey on the eightth.

"Yes, I'm delighted. To actually think, it's my first under par round in a major. US Open is my favourite tournament that we play and which is unusual because you see I'm British. You will think it's the British Open, but Pinehurst was the most special week I've ever had in the golf course two years ago. And this year it's just fabulous. I'm extremely pleased with the start," Dougherty said at the end of a satisying day.

"This golf course is hard. It's hard to make birdies out there and it's just easy to make bogeys and doubles," Tiger Woods says after falling behind to No.3.

For several big names, the first day was more about misses than hits as most of them effectively shot themselves out of contention.
