New Delhi: Disgraced sprinter Tim Montgomery has announced his retirement from athletics after receiving a two-year ban for steroid abuse.

Steve Riddick, Montgomery's coach, had said that the athlete might make a comeback, but that has now been ruled out.

"If he trains like he did last year and the following year he will be ready to run in 2007," Riddick said earlier in the week.

The sprinter was banned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Tuesday despite not testing positive for drugs after the charges were brought by the US Anti-Doping Agency based on evidence gathered in the federal investigation into the Bay Area Laboratory Co-operative (BALCO) case and its founder, Victor Conte.

Montgomery, whose ban expires in the summer of 2007, has denied ever knowingly taking a banned substance.

He has also been ordered by the International Association of Athletics Federation to return all that he has earned from his sprinting career in the last four years. Montgomery said that he would not be doing so.

Montgomery set a world record of 9.78 seconds for the 100m in 2002, a year after winning silver in the 100m and gold in the sprint relay at the World Championships.
