KOCHI: If you are walking along the Ernakulam Medical Centre Road (EMC), it would be better to wear a helmet or the loose metal pieces flying off the road may break your head at any time. This 450 metre long road is the easiest way to reach Ernakulam Medical Centre Hospital from Tripunithura, Irimpanam, Ambalamugal and eastern outskirts of the city. Also, it is so dilapidated that the residents living along the road have to protect their houses and vehicles by using a metal net cover above the compound wall. “We are using a metal net cover to protect our houses and vehicles parked in the porch. Our complaints to repair the road fell on deaf ears. Often autorickshaw drivers refuse to enter EMC road. Pedestrians find it impossible to walk safely on this road,” said Philipose, president of Thaliyil Residents’ Association.Philipose said that delay in the re-tarring worsened the condition of the EMC road. “The residents' association had taken some initiatives for re-tarring the road, however, we stopped the work after the corporation assured us to carry out the work soon. But the corporation did not keep its promise.” In February, as a result of the constant efforts by TRA and other residents, the councillor representing this division assured that the work would be carried out by Mar 31, 2011. The residents allege that the corporation did not take any steps, since the death of the contractor who was supposed to undertake the work. Edappally councillor Murali said, "Though, this road comes under Vyttila division, I took the initiative to carry out the work after seeing the pathetic sight of the road. The tendering process has begun and will be finalised soon. The work is expected to commence soon,” he said.
