New Delhi: Vogue France today appointed its fashion director, Emmanuelle Alt, as editor-in-chief, following the surprise resignation of Carine Roitfeld.

Emmanuelle Alt joined Vogue Paris as the fashion director in 2000. Since then the magazine circulation rose rapidly due to its bold but non controversial fashion layout, of which many had been styled by Alt.

The magazine's owner Condé Nast International wants to continue in the same course.

"Vogue Paris is doing very well and I wanted to entrust the editorship to someone who can provide continuity while bringing new life," said the president of Condé Nast France, Xavier Romatet.

"Emmanuelle has all of the professional and personal qualities needed to continue to make Vogue Paris the leading monthly fashion magazine."

Emmanuelle Alt is devoted exclusively to this new position.

Emmanuelle succeeds Carine on February 1, 2011. The tall lanky Emmanuelle Alt often seen in her own style statement of skinny jeans and a fashionably worn leather jacket, has worked at numerous fashion magazines before joining the French Vogue.

Alt said,"It's a great honor for me, but also a great pleasure to get to the head of Vogue Paris that I know very well. I will try to develop the incredible potential of Vogue Paris while working with very talented teams."

The former creative director of the French Vogue, Fabien Baron said he thought she would make the magazine more accessible to readers. “She’s more commercial than Carine — in a good way,” he said. “She’s looser, more connected to the street.”

Roitfeld left last month after just under a decade at the magazine. The 56-year-old former model was widely tipped to succeed Anna Wintour at Vogue's flagship US title.
