Ex-minister survives ULFA ambush
ULFA militants shot at Assam's former minister, Pradip Hazarika and killed his personal security officer.

Sibsagar: Former Transport Minister and Asom Gana Parishad (ASG) candidate Pradip Hazarika was shot at, his personal security officer killed and a party worker injured in an ambush by United Liberation Front of Assam (ULFA) militants in Sibsagar district on Tuesday.

The incident occurred just two days prior to counting for the Assam assembly polls.

Hazarika, his personal security officer and the party worker were attacked by ULFA insurgents at Disu, under Amguri police station, when they were travelling in a vehicle around 2 pm, District Superintendent of Police, Mrinal Dutta said.

Hazarika, a candidate from Amguri assembly constituency, was Transport Minister in the second AGP government led by Prafulla Kumar Mahanta in 1996-2001.

The militants fired 18 bullets, seriously injuring Hazarika in his back and hand and hitting the PSO on the head.

The party worker received bullet injuries in his abdomen.
