BANGALORE: Kudums is a girl who is intelligent and fun. On Tuesday, Kudums showed students from around 100 schools in the city that learning science can be a combination of both. Kudums is the mascot for Brainstars Stars of November Science Carnival.Held at the Bal Bhavan grounds in Cubbon Park, Stars of November had something for everyone. From science experiments for the junior scientists to music introduction classes for the wandering souls, the carnival ensured that all visitors stayed busy through the day. Also on display were various scientific games and challenges which kept the students guessing. “I give up. What is it,” asked Uday of RCIS after trying hard to guess if the substance in a vessel was solid or liquid. “It is both, it does not follow the Newtonian laws of Physics, it is cornflour in water,” explained Sunaadha, a volunteer. The carnival included a section on Origami which sought to teach children mathemathics by making it interesting. “We shall tie their creations to this tree with a thread. They will remember whatever is taught for a long time as the teaching includes an element of fun,” said V S S Shastri, an Origami specialist.“This is so much better than sitting in a classroom and staring at numbers,” approved Bhavana, a student who happily toted her Origami swan around. The section on experiments conducted by students included demonstrations like generating energy through windmills. “Our windmill generates energy, which can be measured with this voltmeter,” said Ravi Bharadwaj of Royale Concorde School who along with his classmate Uday Shankar and his teacher Lopa managed to create a windmill using a plastic bottle, a block of wood, magnets and an induction coil.“Nanotechnology is the future of science,” said Adnaan Ahad with a knowing glint in his eye. Explaining their project which is a enlarged model of a heart attack prevention device, both Adnaan and his partner Nikhil Vinod displays a belief in the miracles that nanotechnology can bring. The heart attack prevention device, according to 10th Grade students of Delhi Public School, will function from within the body, attack the fat cells and destroy them.“Around 35 to 40 schools have been shortlisted to showcase their projects. We believe learning the concept is more important than cramming theory,” said Ravi Shankar R, CEO, Brainstars. If you want to measure your curiosity, clarity competence, connectivity and communication then KQ test or Kudums quotient test would give you the numbers. The test was the highlight of the show.
