Zurich: The dream Davis Cup first-round clash between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal will not take place in Switzerland after Federer ruled himself out of the tie, Swiss Tennis reported on its website.
Federer wants to focus on defending his world No 1 rank and concentrate on the most important tournaments, the organisation said.
"He said that winning the Davis Cup is important to him as a long-term goal. Swiss Tennis regrets Roger Federer's refusal, but understands," it added.
Federer is already training in Shanghai this week for the Masters Cup starting on Sunday, where he and Nadal lead the year-end field.
Federer played regularly for his country from 2002-2004, reaching one semi-final (against Australia) and two quarter-finals.
He did not play the first round of the Davis Cup this year but saved the Swiss form relegation by playing in September.
