New Delhi: Women and Child Development minister Renuka Chaudhary has finally got the authority to crack down on female foeticide.
According to the proposal, the Pre-Natal Diagnostic Technique Department (PNDT), which keeps a check on female foeticide cases, will be transferred to Renuka’s ministry.
The department is currently under the health ministry, and has so far failed to effectively implement the PNDT act which makes female foeticide a crime.
“There has been no meeting, no survey, entire exercise is a sham in the name of PNDT,” Member, PNDT task force, Ranjna Kumari, says.
But what reason does the Health Minister give for this transfer of the PNDT
For Renuka it means more work. But with elections round the corner, she is walking the political tightrope. To openly criticise Ramadoss is now not an option.
“The minister is not incapable. He has asked for logistical support, which I am sure both of us will be able to carry out,” Renuka says.
PNDT has many stake holders like the doctors, judiciary, and the law enforcers so whether it’s the Health Ministry or the Women and Child Development, loopholes in the implementation of the PNDT will continue till the time the appropriate authority do not get their act together.
