Fencing to prevent suicides at Himayatsagar
Fencing to prevent suicides at Himayatsagar

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB) has temporarily closed the Himayasagar Bund road to take up fencing works. The Himyatsagar and Osmansagar lakes (popularly known as Gandipet) are among the top picnic spots for Hyderabadis.

Especially during weekends, these two places attract a large number of families. On the flip side, they are also fast becoming the favoured destination of those with suicidal tendencies. Besides, some are also losing their lives either in accidents or while fishing and swimming.

Speaking to City Express, Water Board officials said Himayatsagar bund road has been closed and would be opened only after fencing the entire bund stretch. Over the years, the level of parapet wall of the Himayatsagar bund has been shortened due to recarpeting and has now become dangerous. The fencing is expected to be completed by this month-end.

At Osmansagar, the same work would be taken up a little later but officials have already fenced a few areas there to check fishing.

Water level rises

Due to the recent rains in the catchment areas of the Osmansagar and Himyatasagar reservoirs, water levels have increased by three and two feet respectively which is sufficient to meet the drinking water needs of people living in certain localities which are getting water from these two reservoirs up to September this year. Meanwhile, pumping has been stopped and water is being supplied through gravity. These two reservoirs are supplying 40 Million Gallons of Water per Day (MGD) to certain localities in the Old City.
