Finally, Vellore Collectorate bids adieu to monkey menace

Much to the relief of the staff and visitors, the Vellore Collectorate has been freed from monkey menace.

The forest department personnel on Thursday caught eight of the primates trapping them using baits such as fruits, nuts and other edibles placed in boxes.

The group of monkeys had been rampaging the premises of Collectorate for a long time.

The primates often entered the ‘A’ block of  the Collectorate, creating fear and panic among the government staff, especially the women employees. Apart from this, the monkeys also wandered into the surrounding residential quarters.

Official sources said that the monkeys often let the drinking water taps open and damaged the telephone cable lines.

“On Thursday, a team of forest department personnel laid traps for the monkeys. After hours of struggle starting from 7 am up to 2.30 pm, they managed to catch eight monkeys, while four of them escaped. The monkeys have been here for more than two years,” an official said.

After trapping the monkeys, they were locked in cages and later released into the wilderness of Latheri reserve forest area, providing relief  to officials and public, added the official.
