Mumbai: Aishwarya Rai is not the only Bollywood star to be put on the Enforcement Directorate's radar for receiving money from a foreign country. There are 20 other Bollywood stars who have been facing ED scrutiny on similar grounds.
According to a Mumbai newspaper, the ED has asked as many as 20 Hindi film stars to submit the details of international stage shows that they took part in the recent times.
Aishwarya Rai is, of course, one of them who is being investigated after a sum of 23,000 euros was detected in a parcel addressed to her.
Other big names in this shortlist include actors like Bipasha Basu, Akshay Kumar, Dino Morea and Javed Jaffrey. The ED has sent notices to all of them asking for submission of particulars related to the payments that they received for performing abroad. In fact, the ED may also issue summons to these actors to appear before it and explain the details
"We stumbled upon a detailed payment list of three particular stage shows organised by Manun Thakur, an Andheri-based event management firm, which was raided in November 2005. Since January 2006, directives have been issued to actors,” the DNA newspaper quoted a senior ED official as saying.
Aishwarya Rai's counsel Girish Kulkarni, however, denies having received any such notice. "We have no information about the documents and information recovered by the ED about some stage shows in 2004 for which payments were allegedly made in 2003. In any case, in 2003 there was no law on money laundering in India,” he told DNA.
Interestingly, during the raid Thakur allegedly told the ED that in all these cases the payments were made directly by the Dubai-based events management firm that had contracted them. According to ED sources, Rai and some other stars received payments up to Rs50 lakhs for these shows
