Razia Tabassum was alleged to have resorted to corrupt practices in the selection of 184 candidates in BPSC in 2003.

New Delhi: Former chairperson of the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) Razia Tabassum was sent to judicial custody till March 2 on Monday.

She is alleged to have resorted to corrupt practices in the selection of 184 candidates for elevation to the rank of deputy collector in a limited competitive examination in 2003

when she was the chairperson of the BPSC.

Tabassum surrendered before Special Vigilance Judge R N Prasad, two days after he had rejected her prayer for not attaching her property in the case.

Prasad had ordered for attachment of her movable and immovable properties.

The court had on February 9 issued a proclamation notice, which was a step prior to attachment of property against her in the case.

Though Tabassum did not pray for bail, her counsel informed the court that she was a heart patient and prayed that she should be sent to the Patna

Medical College and Hospital instead of jail.

The former BPSC chief showed an admission slip to the court to

corroborate her contention that she was undergoing treatment for heart ailment at Escorts Hospital in Delhi.

However, the judge did not grant her request, but instead asked the Superintendent of Beur jail to make all arrangements for her treatment in the prison premises itself.

On January 6, the vigilance court had issued a non-bailable arrest warrant against her. Her anticipatory bail application was also rejected on January 18.

On December 7, 2005, the Nitish Kumar government had handed over the probe into the rampant irregularities in the selection process to the bureau.

Present BPSC Chairman Ram Singhasan Singh, Deputy Secretary Syed Masoom Ali and seven other employees of the commission were also arrested by the vigilance bureau on December 29, 2005.
