The Centre which is a venture of jail authorities in association with Kerala Legal Services Authority (KELSA) will provide chance for speedy justice and cost-free legal assistance to jail-birds.The Legal Aid Clinic will function with the assistance of educated inmates. They will be appointed as Para-Legal Volunteers who will coordinate among the inmates and a Retainer Lawyer deployed at the Clinic.The Retainer Lawyer will help inmates solve their grievances by writing applications, filing public interest litigation and drafting other petitions. There are more under-trial inmates than convicts owing to the lack of speedy justice. The free legal aid clinic is expected to improve the situation.Such clinics have already started functioning at all the central and open jails in the state. The venture is also part of extending the service in all the district and sub-jails soon.  Earlier, Supreme Court had come up with an order making Legal Aid Centre mandatory in every state.A room in the jail has been allotted to set up the clinic, where lawyers would take up the inmates’ petitions, and it will operate once a week.The Centre will be inaugurated by Justice C N Ramachandran Nair.
