Bangalore: Garbage pile-ups threaten to raise its ugly head in Bangalore once again. Residents in the city's outskirts are holding protests against indiscriminate dumping of garbage.

Residents living near the Mandur landfill, the city's only major landfill, have strictly told the city corporation that garbage trucks would no longer be allowed in the area. They allege no scientific disposal or segregation of waste is being done in the area.

"It is the largest landfill, but they should segregate no? Simply for money-making, they can do illegal activities. They have got no Panchayat permission, no permission from pollution control board. It's illegal," said Gopal Rao, social activist.

"We have twice allowed the government its own six-month time limits to get rid of this but they all tell lies, they have done nothing. This time it's final. Let them bring lathis on us, let them bring their guns, we're willing to take all that, we are willing to die rather than allow the bbmp trucks to go here," added Srinivas Gowda, farmer.

Last year, the residents had allowed dumping to continue after the government assured them that the landfill would be closed by May 31 but the corporation has continued dumping waste there. Panchayat offices were shut on Monday after angry residents called for a bandh.
