CHENNAI: The DMDK, on Tuesday admitted that the Uniform School Education Act (USE), enacted by the DMK regime had drastically brought down the quality of education. However, the party asked the government to go ahead with the USE keeping in mind the ordeal faced by students and in keeping with the verdict of the Madras High Court.“The quality of education had gone down drastically and that the USE Act enacted by the DMK regime had further brought down the quality of education. We have asked for a horse to travel but as of now, we have got only a donkey … but it would not be wrong to use the donkey for travel until we get a horse. Similarly, though our requirement is to remove the shortcomings in the USE, the immediate requirement is to open the schools and start the classes by distributing the textbooks. As such, the TN government should accept the verdict of the HC and make arrangements for functioning of schools immediately”, Vijaykanth said in a statement here. The HC verdict has paved the way for preparing a supplementary reader under USE by deleting the unnecessary portions and including necessary lessons within three months, he said and added that already, parents and students were worried that even after two months after the re-opening of the schools, studies had not begun. “I request the State government to delete the portions that hail the glories of the family of DMK chief M Karunanidhi and to enrich the quality of the textbooks,” the DMDK leaders said.
