The Kathakaliexponent, who is affectionately called as Gopi Asan by students and colleagues,joined as a visiting professor at Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed University of Artand Culture on Monday.He will teach postgraduate students forthree days every month. The first series of classes began here on Monday and willend on Wednesday.Vice-Chancellor of the Kerala KalamandalamDeemed University, P N Suresh had requested him the other day to teach thestudents here after a proposal in this regard was endorsed by the Kalamandalamexecutive board. The Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed University governing councilhas also recently recommended to the University Grants Commission to appointhim as emeritus professor.Gopi had started training in Kathakali atthe Koodallur Mana in 1948. He learnt the basics from Thekkinkatil Ravunni Nair.He joined Kalamandalam in 1951 and trained there till 1957 under Kalamandalam Ramankutty,Kalamandalam Krishnankutty Warrier and Kalamandalam Padmanabhan Nair. Gopibecame a teacher at Kalamandalam in 1958 and its principal in 1990.He retired from service in 1992.“Gopi Asan was here till afternoon. Heoversaw the thodayam performed by the students. After a long hiatus, Kathakali maestro Kalamandalam Gopi, former

principal of Kerala Kalamandalam, is back to his teaching career. The Kathakali

exponent, who is affectionately called as Gopi Asan by students and colleagues,
