After a long hiatus, Kathakali maestro Kalamandalam Gopi, former
principal of Kerala Kalamandalam, is back to his teaching career. The Kathakali
exponent, who is affectionately called as Gopi Asan by students and colleagues,
joined as a visiting professor at Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed University of Art
and Culture on Monday.He will teach postgraduate students for
three days every month. The first series of classes began here on Monday and will
end on Wednesday.Vice-Chancellor of the Kerala Kalamandalam
Deemed University, P N Suresh had requested him the other day to teach the
students here after a proposal in this regard was endorsed by the Kalamandalam
executive board. The Kerala Kalamandalam Deemed University governing council
has also recently recommended to the University Grants Commission to appoint
him as emeritus professor.Gopi had started training in Kathakali at
the Koodallur Mana in 1948. He learnt the basics from Thekkinkatil Ravunni Nair.
He joined Kalamandalam in 1951 and trained there till 1957 under Kalamandalam Ramankutty,
Kalamandalam Krishnankutty Warrier and Kalamandalam Padmanabhan Nair. Gopi
became a teacher at Kalamandalam in 1958 and its principal in 1990.
He retired from service in 1992.“Gopi Asan was here till afternoon. He
oversaw the thodayam performed by the students. He also visited the Vallathol smrithi mandapam on the premises of Kalamandalam,”
Registrar of Kerala Kalamandalam Sundareshan told ‘Express’.
