Government mulls providing subsidised housing loans

Finance Minister K M Mani said that the State Government was considering a project to provide subsidised loans for constructing houses to those who have a minimum of two cents of land of their own but could not afford to build a house till now.

In a press release issued here, ahead of the World Habitat Day on Monday, he said that in the second phase of the Saphalyam project, aimed at providing housing for the downtrodden sections, a total of 750 flats and 500 independent houses will be provided. Mani said that in the first phase, a total of 1,008 flats would be constructed in 10 selected panchayats across the state, at an estimated cost of Rs 30 crore.

After a decade, the Kerala State Housing Board is implementing the project with the financial aid of HUDCO. “Kalavara project, which gives construction materials on subsidised rates to economically weaker sections in the society, will be extended to all districts in the state,” he said. The Minister said that the State Government was also thinking about adding the APL families in the Kalavara project and providing a subsidy of 10 per cent.

The theme for this year’s World Habitat Day is ‘Changing Cities, Building Opportunities’. The idea is to reflect on the state of our towns and cities and the basic right of all, to adequate shelter. “The state-wide World Habitat Day observance will be inaugurated by Speaker G Karthikeyan at Kanakakunnu here on Monday,” he said.
