NUAPADA: The driver of the ill-fated 18426 Durg-Puri Express could know about the derailment only after the train reached Lakhna railway station with two general compartments, two air-conditioned coaches and one sleeper coach.Eight of the bogies had derailed after the train left Nuapada at 7.45 pm. It is said the derailment took place after the coupling between the first two sleeper coaches broke away. However, the engine went back with the bogies to bring back the stranded passengers from Tengnabasa where the derailment had taken place. Although no casualties were reported, many passengers suffered injuries after they hurtled out of their berths along with the baggage. Sources said a major accident was averted as the hillocks had guard walls on both sides of the derailment spot. However, the railway authorities are finding it difficult to speed up the repair and maintenance work in the absence of working space at the spot and till 10 am on Tuesday only one compartment could be put back on the track. The derailment has resulted in rescheduling and cancellation of many trains on the route. While Puri-Durg Express has been cancelled, Puri-Gandhidham Express, Visakhapatnam-Korba Link Express, Visakhapatnam-Nizamuddin Samata Express have been re-routed.
