New Delhi: A public interest litigation (PIL) filed in 1999 by the Rashtriya Mukti Morcha raising questions on the foreign origin of Sonia Gandhi has come back to haunt the Congress.
The Delhi High Court on Thursday issued a notice to the Union government, the Election Commission, the Congress party and Sonia Gandhi demanding reasons on why the Congress and Sonia Gandhi should not be made party to the PIL.
The PIL stated that Sonia Gandhi be barred from holding any Constitutional position including that of UPA chairperson because of her foreign origins.
It also said that until such time that she remains Congress President, the Congress Party itself should be de-recognised.
A division bench has asked all those named in the PIL to file their replies before the court by December 14.
