BANGALORE: Karnataka High Court on Thursday stayed the selection process to appoint 1,353 Panchayat Development Officers (PDOs) across the state. The HC was hearing a petition that has challenged the state government’s decision not to allow a candidate who has applied for the post in one district to apply for the same in another district. The counsel representing Karnataka Public Services Commission (KPSC) contended that the court did not have jurisdiction over the issue as it was a matter of service. The petitioner, N S Vijayanath Babu, said if the prospective candidates were denied permission to apply for the job in other districts, they would be denied the right to employment, granted to them by the Constitution. The KPSC had issued notifications on March 18 this year, inviting applications to fill 1,353 posts of PDOs across the state. The court had earlier issued an interim stay after the writ petition had been filed, challenging the one-candidate-one-district rule.Wakf Board case adjournedThe High Court on Thursday directed the Secretary of the Minority Welfare Department to state the reasons for not conducting elections to the Board, to appoint the administrator to the board and also asked what the administrator has done so far to improve the state of affairs in the board and adjourned the case to June 21.The division bench of the HC asked the Secretary to tell the court about the charges and dates on which notices were issued to the chairman and the members of the board and the procedures adopted while taking action against them.As the Secretary failed to provide plausible answers the court directed him to provide the information sought by the court and adjourned the case.
