High Court bats for self-financing schools
The High Court on Tuesday urged the state government to encourage self-financing private English-medium schools so as to relieve itself of the burden of funding for government and aided schools.

The High Court on Tuesday urged the state government to encourage self-financing private English-medium schools so as to relieve itself of the burden of funding for government and aided schools.

A Division Bench comprising Justice C N Ramachandran Nair and Justice C K Abdul Rahim made the observation while allowing an appeal by A Jayantha Kumar, manager of RVSM HSS, Prayar in Alappuzha, against the govt’s decision to deny recognition to the school.

“The statutory obligation of the govt to impart free education to children in the age group of 6 to 14 does not mean that it should not allow education in private self-financing schools,” the court observed.

If the petitioner’s school is denied recognition, the need should be met by the government by providing an English-medium school in the area, it said.

The petitioner had submitted that it was the only English school functioning in the panchayat.
