KOCHI: Expressing concern over the dilapidated roads in the state, the Kerala High Court on Friday observed that the entire public is disappointed with the pathetic condition of roads.Justice Harun-Ul-Rashid made an oral observation on a petitione filed by C P Ajithkumar, proprietor, Suburban Travels, Mamangalam, seeking a directive to the Corporation of Cochin and the Public Works Department to take up and complete the repairing and maintenance work of the roads as early as possible.“Earlier, the court had directed the authorities to ensure execution of performance guarantee scheme by the contractors. But the situation has turned from bad to worse," petitioner submitted and also alleged that the funds allotted for road maintenance are being pocketed by ‘somebody’.Then the court asked, who is responsible for this situation, the contractors or officials? The petitioner contended that the only permanent solution is the implementation of the performance guarantee scheme. The MG Road in Kochi, constructed under the performance guarantee of five years, is the best example. The MG Road constructed 11 years ago still remains in good condition, he added.“Then why the same yardstick can be used for repairing other roads as well?” the court asked.
