New Delhi: After seven deaths in seven days at Tihar, the Delhi High Court has constituted a three-member committee to ascertain the reasons other than cited illnesses for the convict’s deaths.
On Thursday a five-member team of National Human Rights Commission interacted with the inmates and the jail authorities as part of their inspection. "The recent instances of the deaths of inmates in Tihar Central Jail have given rise to some concern since these have happened despite the steps taken by this court earlier," the Bench observed.
The Court passed the order while taking cognizance of a letter sent by Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kamini Lau drawing the attention about the unsafe environment prevailing in the Asia's largest jail.
An investigation team of NHRC led by SSP Mamta Singh inspected the wards and other facilities.
The NHRC had announced the probe Wednesday after seven deaths were reported in the prison in a week's time. The team is supposed to submit a report of its investigation in two weeks.
According to sources, the team, during their interaction with the jail inmates, enquired about the kind of food they were being served, the sanitation facilities and the treatment given to them among other issues.
The team also inspected the different wards where the deaths occurred in the past week, the facility for cooking and other amenities in the jail.
The team is expected to visit the jail on Friday again.
