CHENNAI: He is not new to Chennai. And, true to his reputation, he made the city sway, cheer and sing along on Sunday evening. But before taking centrestage, the supremely gifted singer, Kailash Kher, in a chat with Express, revealed that he doesn’t come prepared with a list of songs for any concert or stage show. “I never choose songs for any event. I go with the flow and by the audience reactions,” he says. “I never refer to a book of lyrics. All of them are stored in my heart. I just try to soak in the atmosphere and entertain my audience.” So much so that his recent, popular Anna Hazare’s anti-corruption campaign song, ‘Ambar Tak Yahi Naad Gunjega’, didn’t find a place in Sunday’s concert. Kailash explains, “I want to enjoy and entertain my audience. I want to make it a Khushiyon ka Tyohaar (a festival of happiness) event.”Spiritual at heart, Kailash says he found his life’s worth when Anna Hazare told him that the song ‘Ambar Tak...’ is sung by students everyday in the assembly of a school at Ralegan Siddhi, the native village of the anti-corruption crusader.“When I first came to know about Annaji, I was overwhelmed by the kind of movement he was pursuing, and the passion and hunger he has to stand up for his values,” says Kailash. “It called upon my deshbhakti (patriotism), and hence, I penned this song. When Annaji told me that my song is being sung by students now, I felt that, by God’s grace, my life was worth on earth,” he explains.Having sung songs in 16 different languages, the versatile singer says that he enjoys singing in all the tongues,  and the different diction and dialects fascinate him. However, he refuses to choose a favourite. It was the song ‘Allah ke Bande’ that made him a household name. “After my business collapsed, I moved to Mumbai to record an album. Music has had a lot of influence on me since my formative years. It was mostly classical during the beginning, not much film songs,” recalls Kailash. “But then, I got to sing my first film song. That happened by luck and opened an avenue for me.“I feel like destiny’s child. It was a great beginning,” he explains.Indeed, there seems to be no stopping the sufi magician. Kailash’s fourth album, Kailasa Rangeele, is due for release soon.
