KOCHI: Corporation councillor Antony Kureethara was attacked by a group of illegal occupants who have set their makeshift stalls in Fort Kochi. “Since I was in the forefront of the drive to evict illegal occupants, I was waylaid and threatened by the staff of unauthorised food stalls. They said it was just a warning and I will be manhandled and killed if I try to get in their way,” Antony said.The incident happened opposite Delta School where Antony attended a function. “They gathered around my bike and asked about the High Court order to evict illegal occupants. They tried to assault me and said they will not spare me if anyone tried to evict them,” he said. Antony filed a petition at the Fort Kochi police station.Recently, the High Court had directed the Ernakulam district collector to take strict measures against unauthorised occupants thriving in the Fort kochi heritage zone, based on a public interest litigation filed by Darson Antony on behalf of Carnival Paithrika Samrakshana Forum. As Fort kochi is a heritage zone, illegal vendors are not allowed in the area. There have been many unsuccessful attempts to evict illegal occupants.
