AKUNURU (Krishna): With tension continuing at Akunuru village for the third day on Wednesday over a funeral procession, secondary education minister K Parthasarathi’s efforts to resolve the issue failed. The minister reached the village in the afternoon and held discussions with both groups and those differing over giving a passage to the burial ground through Malapalli. When his efforts failed to yield any result, he asked the police to act as per law and left the village.Meanwhile, Pedala Nyaya Vedika convener T Chiranjeevi filed a wr i t p e t i t i o n No : 23886/2011 in the High Court in support of those who are objecting to the passage of funeral procession through their colony.High Cour t judge Ramesh Ranganathan ordered that the Zilla Parishad road could be used if it was the shortest route to the burial ground though it passes through Malapalli. He directed the police to take all preventive steps to deal with any law and order problem in the village. But an uneasy calm prevailed in the village as both groups are rigid on their stance without giving any scope for a consensus.A posse of nearly 400 policemen along with an assistant commissioner of police are guarding the area as the sensitive issue may flare up anytime. As a result of the rift between the two groups over the funeral procession, the body of K Koteswaramma (80) who died on Monday, is rotting on the road waiting for cremation. The villagers claim that the distance to the burial ground through Malapalle is 1.3 km or else they have to take a roundabout route of 5.4 km.They say it was unjust on the part of Malas asking the family of the deceased to take a roundabout route to the burial ground. This kind of impasse over funeral procession is not for the first time in the villageThe issue has been simmering since 2006 without any solution.East Zone ACP Mohammed Khan said the village was still tense as both groups failed to arrive at a consensus on the route of funeral procession.
