In Another Pune Hit-And-Run Case, Delivery Boy Dies After Being Hit By 'Drunk' Audi Driver
Pune hit-and-run: Police checked the CCTV footage from the area and tracked the diver of the Audi down to his house

A food delivery executive died after being hit by an Audi car at a posh locality in Pune past midnight on Friday. The supposedly drunk driver hit a two-wheeler and injured three people before hitting the victim’s motorcycle.

According to Pune Police, the incident took place around 1 am in Pune’s Koregaon area.

The deceased was identified as Rauf Shaikh. The accused, identified as 34-year-old Ayush Tayal, was arrested, the police said.

‘Drunk’ Driver Injured 3 Others

Police said that an alleged drunk driver first hit a two-wheeler, injuring three people, adding that he then hit the motorcycle in which the victim, Rauf Shaikh, was travelling.

As the car hit Shaikh’s vehicle from behind, he fell and sustained severe injuries. He was rushed to the nearest hospital, but the doctors declared him dead.

Police said the suspect, 34-year-old Ayush Tayal, fled from the spot after the accident near Tadigutta in the city’s Mundhwa area. They checked the surveillance camera footage from the locality and tracked him down to his residence. They then arrested him from his residence in the Hadapsar area.

“The car driven by Tayal crashed into Shaikh’s bike. The accused fled the scene but was later detained after police used footage of CCTV cameras to identify the car and then track him down with its details,” said Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Pail.

Tayal is a senior executive at a firm in Ranjangaon MIDC and he has been sent for a medical examination to ascertain if he was intoxicated at the time of the accident, the official said.

A case has been registered under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) Sections 105 (culpable homicide), 281 (rash driving), 125(a) (endangering life or personal safety), 132 (assaulting police officer on duty, 119 (inflicting hurt or grievous hurt) and other relevant sections of the Motor Vehicles Act.

Pune is not new to such incidences of drunken and rash driving. Earlier this year, on May 19, a Porsche driven by a 17-year-old boy hit and killed two IT engineers, Aneesh Awadhiya and Ashwini Koshta, in the Kalyani Nagar area of Pune. The boy was allegedly under the influence of alcohol.
