A group of veterinarians at the Chitte Pili Rescue Centre in Managaluru recently treated a ten-foot-long injured python that sustained injuries after getting entangled in a net and shot with an air gun. On examination, the doctors found 11 airgun pellets indicating that attempts had been made to kill this 12 kg python by shooting it with an air gun from some time back. While nine airgun pellets remain inside the snake as removal of the same was not possible, two that were right below the python’s skin have been removed said Dr Yashaswi, a veterinarian from Chitte Pili Rescue Centre.
The snake is currently under observation by a team led by Dr Yashaswi and Dr Meghana Pemmaiah. Python was rescued by Bhuvan Devadiga from Anegudi in Bejai district on April 20. Range Forest Officer Rajesh contacted him about the injured snake. “The snake was entangled in a net after it had killed a cat and was trying to swallow it,” said Bhuvan Devadiga, who has rescued more than 1000 snakes. Since the rescue was difficult as it was found entangled in the net, the RFO sent his team with a cage and then it was later transported to Dr Yashaswi.
Snake rescuer Bhuvan Devadiga claims that it does not seem to be a recent injury. “A miscreant may have tried to kill it a few months ago. This is the first of its kind rescue of a snake that I have witnessed with pellet injuries” said Bhuvan Devadiga while talking to TOI reporters. The X-ray revealed that there were 11 air gun bullets inside the snake which also posed the risk of poisoning. Dr Yashaswi told TOI that the snake had sustained major injuries because of the net that it was found entangled in, for which ‘it has been treated’. “ The 12 kg female python, which is about 10 feet long, is being treated at the clinic. There is no way that the pellets can be removed. In the long run, it could lead to poisoning” Dr Yashwasi added.
