New Delhi: Makar Sankranti is being celebrated across the country on Friday. The festival marks the entry of the Sun in Capricorn and signifies the arrival of the spring and the beginning of the harvest season.
The festival also is an opportunity where thousands take a holy dip in river Ganga to atone their sins.
Marking the day of Makar Sankranti, royal ornaments meant to adorn Lord Ayyappa are expected to reach Sabarimala temple on Friday.
Every year, the ornaments are taken from Pandalam to Sabarimala over a three day procession. Legend has it that these ornaments were given to Lord Ayyappa by his foster father - the king of Pandalam. The deity will be adorned with the ornaments on Friday, ending the two month long Sabarimala festival.
In the South, mainly in Tamil Nadu, people are celebrating Pongal. Four days' harvest festival marks the auspicious beginning of Uttarayan, that is the Sun's journey towards the north. Delicious Pongal food, drawing of Kolam marks the beginning of the first day of the festival.
