New Delhi: At least 20 people may have been charred beyond recognition in Wednesday's Indonesian plane crash.

The ill-fated Garuda flight carrying 133 passengers and seven crew members overshot the runway and burst into flames while landing at the airport of the Indonesian city of Yogyakarta

The cause of the crash is being investigated.

An Indonesian government official has confirmed that 49 people have died in the crash.

Several Australian diplomats and journalists were on board the plane when the accident happened.

Video footage from the scene showed rescue workers and onlookers surrounding the plane's smoking fuselage. The top of the plane appeared to have burned away.
