Indore halts construction to save water
The acute shortage of water has forced the Municipal Corporation of Indore to stop all construction work in the city.

Indore The acute shortage of water has forced the Municipal Corporation of Indore to stop all construction work in the city till June 7.

Work on more than 4,000 small and 500 big residential and commercial projects will be affected by the order.

The district administration said that builders use up to a two-and-half lakh litres of water every day.

"We got a report from the municipal corporation in which even the Superintendent of Police has expressed his concern about the fact that nearly two to two-and-a-half lakh litres of water is being used for construction activity in the city everyday," said Collector, Indore Vivek Agarwal.

"In the times of acute water crisis, if this wastage is stopped than we can save a huge amount of water," he added.

The ground water level of the city has dipped to an alarming extent and now even after digging up to 600 meters level in the ground, no ground water seems available.

There are about 20,000 private boring wells in Indore out of which 15,000 have already dried up.

Total water requirement of Indore is up to 300 million litres of water per day but the supply is only about 180 million litres.

The builders are very upset with the decision of the municipal corporation since they are facing huge losses everyday.

"This ban has caused us losses of several lacks. All constructions have been stopped," said one builder in Indore.

Even the residents are not happy with this decision.

Reeta Kale, one of the residents said she was hoping to shift into her new appartment soon but now she was not sure whether she would get the possession anytime soon.

"We are not sure about the possession since construction has been stopped. We have to continue living in a rented house despite paying the money for a new house which we had expected to get soon," said she.

The municipal commission has warned that if any builder continues the construction work, legal action will be taken against them under Section 144.
