Hong Kong: Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi and first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru were among the Asian heroes who were remembered as Time magazine held a function to commemorate its 60 years of Asian Heroes special anniversary issue.
The two heroes of India's freedom movement were represented by their great grandsons Tushar A Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi respectively at an exclusive gala dinner on Wednesday evening. The magazine presented recognition awards to heroes at the event.
"They were opposite in nature, but they shared a passion for freedom and justice, and together created a giant of democracy," the magazine says about Gandhi and Nehru.
Infosys Founder Narayana Murthy, who has been honoured as a Time Asian hero, also attended the event.
"It has been our privilege to encounter the most exceptional of them. We have many of them here with us tonight, and it is an honour to acknowledge the role they have played in shaping the Asia of our times," Time International Editor, Michael Elliott, said.
Former Philippine President and Time Asian Hero Corazon Aquino was guest of honour at the event.
Among the Asian heroes honoured at the gala were Japan's Akio Morita and Masaru Ibuka, who made Sony an icon of the country's rebirth, Youk Chhang, who was a relentless investigator of Cambodia's killing fields, Taiwanese engineer Stan Shih, who turned Taiwan into a PC-manufacturing powerhouse and King Bhumibol Adulyadej, who used his moral authority to guide Thailand through many crises.
