CHENNAI: Continuing her attack on the Congress-led UPA government at the Centre, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Thursday charged that the Centre had not allocated even a single rupee for providing laptops to schools students while the State government had earmarked Rs 912 crore for the purpose.Intervening during the discussion on the demands for grants for Information Technology in the State Assembly, the Chief Minister said, “Congress member J G Prince has been speaking about the importance of safeguarding the interests of youth. Is it only the responsibility of the State government to protect the interests of the youth? Is it not the responsibility of the Centre too? The State government has earmarked Rs 912 crore for providing laptops to the students. But the Centre has not even extended a single rupee for this scheme.”To this, the Congress member referred to a Biblical quote, “Knock and the door will be opened to you; Ask and it will be given to you.” Responding, the CM said, “We have been asking the Centre for many a time. But there has been no reply. This phrase would applicable only to the State government.” However, the CM agreed to a demand from the member for building a memorial for freedom fighter Marshall Nesamani in Kanyakumari district. The Congress member promised the CM that his party would also demand funds for Tamil Nadu. The CM recalled that when she met the PM two months ago, she had sought a special assistance of Rs 2.5 lakh crore for the development of Tamil Nadu.
