New Delhi: Supreme Court Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan on Saturday regretted that judiciary was being "neglected" in the development process and said 10 per cent of the plan fund should be earmarked for it.
"We are criticised in Parliament. But give us the basic infrastructure", Balakrishnan said after inaugurating the case Information system at the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT).
"This situation should change and courts should become a major area of change", he said.
Pointing out that the Indian Judicial system was heading for a 'great revolution' in the field of computerisation, he said in a short time, judges would have laptops and it would be possible to send summons through e-mails.
There was a lot of expectations from courts. "Though we are trying our level best, the number of cases are increasing every year, which shows that people still have faith in the system," he said.
In the Kerala High Court, there has been a 10 per cent increase in the number of cases, though there has not been a corresponding increase in the staff strength.
"Increase in cases is a good sign for the lawyers, but is a task for judges", he said.
More number of courts and adequate manpower are needed to ensure speedy disposal of cases, he added.
