KOCHI: Considering the gravity of the situation, Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) authorities will hold a meeting with the shop owners at the Kaloor market on April 10. After rehabilitating the existing vendors, GCDA will convert the market to a modern commercial complex.“We have received various complaints regarding the bad state of the GCDA market at Kaloor. After identifying that it is not possible to shift the shops from Deshabhimani market to Kaloor, GCDA is left with no other option than to close down the facility. We are planning to construct an advanced shopping mall in its place,” said GCDA chairman N Venugopal. He said that GCDA was planning to rehabilitate the existing vendors to some other small plots the city. “We will hold a discussion with the vendors on Tuesday. They have already expressed their willingness to shift from the place. An official decision on rehabilitation is expected to be taken on that day,“ he added.Venugopal said that along with the Kaloor market, GCDA is also planning to come up with new projects in major areas like the near Ambedkar Stadium and NGO Quarters. These projects will be accomplished on the land owned by GCDA. “We are planning to utilise the large plots owned by GCDA to start commercial ventures. The existing vendors in these areas can be rehabilitated to smaller plots,” he added.
