Bangalore: The Karnataka government is planning to declare IT industry and all IT enabled services as essential services. The IT industry will come under the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) once the government formally notifies its order. It will exempt the I-T industry from bandhs, strikes and long holidays.
According to government sources IT is a 24X7 industry and it can't be treated like other jobs. This effort is being seen as a step forward by the state government to instill confidence in the minds of IT industry captains.
Many top international IT companies are hesitating to scale up their operations in India because of bandhs and strikes for various reasons.
Karnataka is the largest exporter of IT in the entire South Asia. It contributes nearly 40 per cent of India's total IT exports. IT exports from the state stood at Rs 1.35 lakh crore during 2012-13. Of this, exports from tier-2 cities such as Mysore, Mangalore and Hubli-Dharwad stood at Rs 2,680 crore.
The government is expecting an IT export target of Rs 1.5 lakh crore during 2013-14. The government also expects IT exports to go up to Rs 4 lakh crore by 2020.
The Centre has sanctioned an ITIR (IT investment region) to Karnataka and it will come up near Bengaluru International Airport Ltd (BIAL) on 40 sqaure km of land. This will help create 12 lakh direct jobs and 28 lakh indirect jobs. 12 lakh direct jobs and 28 lakh indirect jobs.
