KADAPA: ‘Kasi Mutt Peethadhipati’ Raghavendra Teertha Swami remains in police custody even after the local magistrate has granted him bail as he failed to fulfil the formalities for his release. The police kept the swamiji under ‘house arrest’ in the same flat where he has been `hiding’ for the past few months. This they did on his representation to them to enable him to continue to worship the idols without a break so that the sentiments of the devotees of the Mutt would not be hurt. The magistrate, however, adjourned on Wednesday the hearing on the Kerala police’s PT warrant seeking the custody of swamiji in connection with a criminal case filed at Ernakulam The magistrate dismissed on technical grounds a petition of GG Prabhu, holder of GPA (general power of attorney) of Kasi Mutt Peethadhipati Sudhindra Teertha Swamiji, filed through his Bengaluru-based advocate Ravindranatha Kamath and local advocate Ajay Kumar Veena, seeking the possession of the antique idols and precious stones seized from Raghavendra Teertha contending that the valuables belonged to the mutt.Prabhu contented that the idols, which are more than 1,500 years old, and other precious metals were the valued possessions of the Mutt. The mutt, he said, wanted the idols back to be worshipped after conducting special rituals. The court complex buzzed with the Kerala police who were trying to take custody of the pontiff and swamiji’s supporters.
