A right break in one’s sporting career can make him an overnight superstar. It will be this statement that will sound in the minds of two teenagers from the district, Rahul M and Jijo F, when they showcase their tenacity and skill before an elite panel of coaches in Bangalore for the final trials organised under the Airtel Rising Star (ARS) talent scouting programme launched by Bharti Airtel in association with Manchester United Club.
The highlight of the programme is that 12 promising students will get a chance for a week-long training at Manchester United Soccer School (MUSS).
Rahul and Jijo, along with two other talents from the State, were handpicked for the final trials after the initial trials held in Kochi. Rahul, hailing from Karakulam, is a plus-one student at GV Raja Sports School, while Jijo, hailing from Pozhiyoor, is doing his plus-one at St Joseph’s HSS in the city.
Both youngsters, who have had to tide over difficult circumstances, are vividly aware that the chance in offing, if properly utilised, would open more doors of opportunities before them. “We are sure that we would do well in Bangalore as well. It is a good chance for us,” they said in one voice.
Concentrating on soccer has certainly not been an easy task for Rahul and Jijo, both coming from a humble family background. Rahul’s father is a headload worker at Karakulam, while Jijo’s father depends on fishing for earning their daily bread. But the resilience and determination that they amassed from life’s experiences have come in handy for them to edge out other competitors during the trials.
Soccer has been acclaimed for bringing glory to those who could not afford expensive training facilities or brag about ancestral wealth. Be it the case of Pele or Maradona, football legends have been elevated to cult status courtesy only the game. The teens too seem aware of this.
The hours-long training they undergo under the tutelage of their respective coaches speaks about their interest to perform well in the training camp that will be held during September 9-16.
The District Football Association secretary, Gee Varghese, too seemed confident about the lads. ”They are very promising and this is a good opportunity that they should seize with both hands. If they can perform to their ability, then they can make the state and country proud,” he said.
