KOCHI: The abandoned grounds of Manapattiparambu are buzzing with activity. The preliminary work of the Kochi Metro Rail project has started in Manapattiparambu. The area will be used for the casting of girders and other equipment for the reconstruction of the North Overbridge. The JCB has been doing the rounds on the Manappattiparambu since Monday. "Once the JCB clears the area of plants and weeds, we will start levelling the ground. The JCB work is likely to get over on Thursday. After the levelling work we will look into the construction of labour camps, office, working yards and batching camps," said site engineer Sudeep Kumar. The land surveillance has also begun. Once the basic construction work is completed, the area will be used to house the labourers and store the equipment. After conducting the preliminary work, pre-casting of girders and other work will start. "But the work on the North Overbridge, including the installation of these girders and other things, may take time. The  shopkeepers in the area will have to be relocated. The government has  assured that this will be done in a week. But unless the relocation is done we will be able to do only the processing work at Manapattiparambu," said DMRC, PA, project director, Vishwanathan. The 2.8-acre land was handed over to the Delhi Metro Rail corporation (DMRC) by the Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) last week.
