After 24 years, Vishal Krishnamoorthy, Maheswar and Aleena are returning to the audience’s view. The team behind Mohanlal’s iconic romance horror film Devadoothan are preparing for a grand re-release. The movie is set to hit theatres on July 26, exciting fans and cinephiles alike. Directed by Sibi Malayil, the film will be re-released with stunning 4K visuals and sound. Director Sibi Malayil promises a new cinematic experience. The 4K trailer was recently unveiled at an event in Kochi and Mohanlal expressed that Devadoothan is one of his favourite films.
Reflecting on the film’s tagline and its current relevance, he stated, “This film carries a poignant message encapsulated in its tagline, ‘Someone has something to say to someone.’ During the trailer launch, Mohanlal also honoured filmmaker Sibi Malayil, with whom he has collaborated previously. Mohanlal, discussing the restoration and 4K upgrade of the film, noted that only a few movies have preserved their prints in excellent condition. “This movie was shot on actual film. My first question was how it remained undamaged after all these years. Many old labs no longer exist and film rolls can deteriorate over time. This film was fortunate. It’s now set for re-release. The tagline of Devadoothan is ‘Someone has something to say to someone.’ Now I realise that we have something to say to you,” he said.
Mohanlal fondly remembered his co-stars, stating, “Jayaprada, Jayalakshmi and Murali, who were crucial to the film, are remembered on this occasion.” He also discussed the film’s lacklustre box office performance during its original release. “Considering why Devadoothan didn’t succeed at the box office back then, I wouldn’t say it was ahead of its time. Maybe its message was perceived differently back then or it faced strong competition from other movies. Many worthy films encounter similar issues,” he explained. The film won three state awards, including Best Popular Film, Best Costume Design and Best Music Direction.
