Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa on Monday ordered the construction of a causeway across the Kosasthalai river at a cost of Rs 2.86 crore.
The 65-year-old sluice bridge on the banks of Poondi reservoir in Tiruvallur district is in a state of disrepair. With a view to preventing damage to the infrastructure of the dam due to vibration caused by vehicles passing through the bridge and as an alternative to the sluice bridge, the Chief Minister directed that a causeway be constructed across Kosasthalai river, which ran below the reservoir.
The causeway would connect roads along the villages of Krishnapuram, Nayapakkam, Nandampakkam and Ariyathur located in between the Poondi Panchayat road and Rangapuram village, thus helping the people of the area, an official release here said. The CM also directed that Singaneri lake in Sunnanthan Melaiyur village, Thanjavur district, be desilted at an expenditure of Rs 75 lakh.
The renovation work would include laying the bank of the lake with an uniform breadth of five metres, rebuilding the sluice gate, setting up an additional sluice gate and desilting the inflow channels.
The measure would increase the water storage capacity of the lake and benefit 189 acres of lands in the area, the release added.
