BANGALORE: Kudremukh National park(KNP) has been granted an approval as a tiger reserve by National Tiger Conservation Authority(NTCA). With this approval, KNP has become the sixth tiger reserve in Karnataka and 41st in the country.
Located at the trijunction of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Chikmagalur, KNP is one of the largest expanses of grassland shola ecosystem in the midwestern ghats of Karnataka.Speaking to Express S Swaminathan, chief conservator of forests said that during the recent visit, Union Minister for Environment and Forests Jairam Ramesh directed us to submit a proposal to declare KNP as a tiger reserve and received the approval on May 20.

Kudremukh is the largest protected area in the western ghats of Karnataka. This 600.32 sqkm nature reserve has mountainous terrain, high annual rainfall and performs critical hydrological ecosystem functions. According to the centre for wildlife studies, KNP is home to eight healthy tigers with no diseases.

KNP has an estimated number of 2,500 species of flowering plants, one third of which are endemic to the western ghats. There are 400 species of known medicinal plants, 180 species of edible plants and 70 species of Orchids. The national park has around 700 to 750 species of mushrooms.

It also contains some of the rare primates such as a Slender Loris, lion tailed Macaque, four species of Civets, Malabar giant squirrel and common giant flying squirrel.

These families have opted out of rehabilitation and are ready to move only if they are paid a suitable compensation by the revenue authority.
